The 35-year-old, who was believed to be a pit bull breeder, was found mauled to death in the backyard of his Compton home in Los Angeles on Friday, according to Fox News.

The Compton Fire Department along with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call from a woman saying her boyfriend was hurt in a backyard dog kennel around 8am.

The man was found dead in the backyard after being mauled by the dogs.

Surveillance footage appears to have captured some of the attack. Police said the man appeared to have been feeding the dogs when some of them began fighting, leading to the ultimate attack on the man.

Investigators said there were 13 dogs at the home, with five of them adult and the others considered puppies.

Police could not immediately confirm the man was breeding the animals, but it appeared likely given the number of dogs at the home and the presence of several kennels in the backyard.

Video footage shows the immediate aftermath of the attack with a woman escaping from the yard by climbing over a high wall after the attack as police and firefighters captured the dogs.

Neighbours expressed shock at the attack and many were unaware so many pit bulls lived at the property.

Damian Wesley from the Compton Animal Rescue told ktml.com he hoped “that awareness is spread”.

“People need to take great care of their dogs,” he said. “People need to understand that these dogs can kill somebody and hurt people.”
