Orlando reeling after horror week with shooting death of Christina Grimmie, Pulse nightclub attack and toddler snatched by alligator at Disney World
HOW much can the people of Orlando take? First singer Christina Grimmie was killed, then the Pulse nightclub attack, now an alligator has taken a toddler.
HOW much can the people of Orlando take? First singer Christina Grimmie was killed, then the Pulse nightclub attack, now an alligator has taken a toddler at Disney World.
The nightmare began on Friday night for the city of 250,000 people when Grimmie, who came third on The Voice in the US, was shot while signing autographs for fans at the Plaza Live in Orlando following a concert.
The 22-year-old had a big following online and had been signed by Selena Gomez and her parents when she was just 14, supporting Gomez on her 2011 tour.
Police are still trying to determine why 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl drove 160 kilometres while carrying two small calibre handguns and a hunting knife.
Destiny Rivera recalled on Facebook how she was standing behind the shooter in line for an autograph.
Ms Rivera said that when it was Loibl’s turn to meet Grimmie, the singer greeted her killer with “her arms open wide ready to greet him, as she would any of her other friends with such enthusiasm.”
Loibl opened fired on her before Grimmie’s brother, Mark, tackled the shooter before he turned the gun on himself.
Then early on Sunday morning just six kilometres across town, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 50 others at Pulse nightclub.
Survivors say he opened fire with a semiautomatic weapon and pledged alliegence to the Islamic State during the three-hour bloodbath.
Mateen’s ex-wife, Sifora Yusufiy, has said Mateen alluded to a secret private life before they were married — a marriage arranged online in 2008, which lasted two years.
“He might have been gay but chose to hide his true identity out of anger and shame,” she said.
A number of others say the 29-year-old was a regular at Pulse and that he had been on gay hook-up apps like Grindr.
Then, yesterday at Disney World a two-year-old boy was snatched off the sand by an alligator at a resort lagoon.
His parents both made attempts to save their son but he still hasn’t been found
Police have euthanised four alligators but say none of them were responsible for taking the boy.
Searches for the boy began again at first light but have so far not found any sign of him.
Hotel guest A.J. Jain and his wife travelled from Georgia to Disney for a conference.
“I’m just here to say a prayer,” he told the Orlando Sentinel. “I can’t imagine what those parents are going through. It’s been one tough week in Orlando.”
