At least five people are dead and 18 others are injured after a mass shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in the United States.

Police in Colorado Springs, Colorado, were called to the scene of Club Q, near the city’s downtown area, just before midnight on Saturday, local time.

“They did locate one individual who we believe to be the suspect inside,” Colorado Springs Police Lieutenant Pamela Castro told the media.

“At this point in time, the suspect is being treated, but is in custody.”

Almost a dozen ambulances also responded to the scene. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was assisting law enforcement on the ground.

In an update on Sunday morning, local time, police revealed the gunman had been subdued by two patrons of the club, saying “we owe them a great debt of thanks”.

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich. Police said he was carrying at least two firearms, including a rifle, and was previously arrested last year in connection with a bomb threat.

An alleged motive has yet to be established. Police said they were investigating whether the shooting was a hate crime. Aldrich allegedly entered the club as it was hosting a drag show and immediately opened fire.

“Club Q is devastated by the senseless attack on our community,” the nightclub said in a brief statement posted on social media.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with all the victims and their families and friends. We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate.”
