Manhunt after 10 killed in mass stabbing in remote Canadian communities

Police said they found 10 deceased bodies across 13 areas, as authorities scramble to find the two suspects they believe are responsible for the violent attack.

Ten people have been killed and up to 15 injured in stabbings across two remote Canadian communities, with the two suspects still at large.

The Saskatchewan Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have launched a manhunt across three provinces for Damien, 31, and Myles Sanderson, 30. The suspects are believed to be armed and dangerous and police have warned people to not approach the two men.

Initial stabbings were reported from 5.40am local time, with attack reported across 13 locations. As it stands, it’s believed there may be more victims.

It’s believed the men may be driving a black Nissan Rogue with the Saskatchewan license plate 119 MPI.

Suspects identified, motive unknown

Authorities have described Damien as being 170cm and 70kgs with black hair and brown eyes. Myles is believed to be 185cm, 108kg with brown hair and brown eyes.

Residents in the Saskatchewan province have been asked to take shelter and use caution if allowing others into their homes.

According to RCMP Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, some victims were targeted while other were stabbed at random. As of yet, no motive has been provided for the attack.

“It is certainly a very significant event if not the largest we’ve seen in the last number of years,” she said in a news conference.

“We have located 10 deceased individuals in 13 locations in the community of James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, Saskatchewan.

“Several additional victims have been injured, 15 of which at this point have been transported to various hospitals,” she added.

Justin Trudeau speaks

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has thanked first responders and called the stabbing as “horrific and heartbreaking”.

“I’m thinking of those who have lost a loved one and of those who were injured,” he tweeted on Monday.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, and urge everyone to follow updates from local authorities.”

The mass stabbing occurred at James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon in the Saskatchewan province of central Canada. The alert has also been extended to the nearby areas of Manitoba and Alberta, as police scramble to find the suspects.

The mass police search has coincided with a sold out Labour Day Canadian football game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Regina Police and RCMP have increased police resources in the city of Regina, including Mosaic Stadium where the game will be played.

A statement from the Saskatchewan Roughriders said the club’s centralised command centre has been established so that they could receive “up to the minute information” immediate connection to local emergency services and “immediate connection to local emergency services”.
