Donald Trump's impeachment trial comes to an end with final vote

US President Donald Trump has responded to his Senate acquittal in classic Trump fashion - it's one cheeky message for the Democrats.

Impeachment Trial: Senate acquits President Trump on first charge

After almost three weeks, the Senate impeachment trial of US President Donald Trump has officially ended.

Mr Trump has been acquitted of both charges against him.

On Article 1, for abuse of power, the Senate voted 52-48, with Republican senator Mitt Romney siding with the Democrats.

On Article 2, for obstruction of Congress, the Senate split along party lines at 53-47.

A total of 67 Senators would have had to vote against the President to have him removed from office.

We're now watching for public responses from key figures of the trial - especially Mr Trump's.

White House issues full statement

The White House has just issued a statement following Donald Trump's acquittal.

Here it is in full:

Today, the sham impeachment attempt concocted by Democrats ended in the full vindication and exoneration of President Donald J. Trump. As we have said all along, he is not guilty. The Senate voted to reject the baseless articles of impeachment, and only the President’s political opponents – all Democrats, and one failed Republican presidential candidate – voted for the manufactured impeachment articles.

In what has now become a consistent tradition for Democrats, this was yet another witch-hunt that deprived the President of his due process rights and was based on a series of lies. Rep. Adam Schiff lied to Congress and the American people with a totally made up statement about the President’s phone call. Will there be no retribution? Speaker Nancy Pelosi also lied to the American people about the need to swiftly pass impeachment articles they dreamt up, only to sit on them for a month before sending over to the Senate. In the Senate, the Democrats continued to make their political motivations clear – Rep. Schiff proclaimed the issues “cannot be decided at the ballot box” – proving once again they think they know better than the voters of this country. This entire effort by the Democrats was aimed at overturning the results of the 2016 election and interfering with the 2020 election.

Throughout this wholly corrupt process, President Trump successfully advanced the interests of the United States and remained focused on the issues that matter to Americans. He spent his time achieving real victories for the people of this country, and the Democrats – once again – have nothing to show for their fraudulent schemes. The President is pleased to put this latest chapter of shameful behavior by the Democrats in the past, and looks forward to continuing his work on behalf of the American people in 2020 and beyond.

Trump's allies boast of 'acquittal for life'

Donald Trump's allies are boasting that the President has been "acquitted for life".

Here's his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani using the phrase:

And Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy:

The phrase appears to be a reference to Nancy Pelosi, who recently said Mr Trump has been "impeached forever".

Trump to make statement

Donald Trump will make a statement tomorrow afternoon (4am Friday AEDT) on his acquittal.

Donald Trump posts first tweet after acquittal

Donald Trump has just posted his first tweet following his acquittal.

It's an animation of a fake TIME Magazine cover with signs saying 'TRUMP 2024', 'TRUMP 2028' and onward, going up to 'TRUMP 2048'.

That number then rises dramatically into the tens of thousands, before ending on 'TRUMP 4EVA'.

The cocky response shows Trump isn't backing down after the impeachment and subsequent acquittal in the Senate.

Watch this space. There'll be a lot more to come.

Trump campaign releases statement after acquittal

The Trump campaign has released a statement declaring victory over the Democrats.

The President's campaign manager Brad Parscale declared that Mr Trump had been "totally vindicated", slamming the process as a "terrible ordeal" and the "worst miscalculation in history".

It also tweeted a photoshopped photo of Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell's face on Nancy Pelosi's in the now-famous clip of her ripping up the President's speech.

Trump officially acquitted by Senate

Donald Trump has been acquitted of the second charge against him, obstruction of Congress.

This means the impeachment process is officially over, and the President will remain in the White House.

The Senate voted on party lines, with 53 votes to acquit Mr Trump versus 47 votes against him.

The votes fell short of the two-thirds majority required to remove a President from office, meaning Democrats will have to wait till November to attempt to end Mr Trump's presidency.

Supreme Court chief justice John Roberts read the final votes on both articles of impeachment and declared the President to be acquitted.

He said: “The Senate having tried Donald John Trump, President of the United States, upon two Articles of Impeachment exhibited against him by the House of Representatives, and two-thirds of the Senators present not having found him guilty of the charges contained therein: it is, therefore, ordered and adjudged that the said Donald John Trump be, and he is hereby, acquitted of the charges in said articles.”

Vote on second article of impeachment

The Senate is now voting on the second article of impeachment, obstruction of Congress.

This vote is expected to be split along party lines at 53-47, as Mitt Romney – who voted with the Democrats on the first article – has indicated he will vote "not guilty" here.

Regardless, it will fall short of the 67 total senators needed to remove the President from office.

Donald Trump acquitted of first impeachment charge

The Senate voted 52-48 in Mr Trump's favour, with Mr Romney joining the 47 Democrats in voting to convict the President.
