Deaths after school shooting in Georgia, US
It’s been reported that at least two people have died after a school shooting in a town near Atlanta in the US.
Multiple people are reported to have died at shooting at a school in the US, just one day after the start of the school year.
Police and ambulances rushed to a high school in Georgia on Wednesday (US time) after reports of an active shooter and possible injuries, with students evacuated from the scene.
The Apalachee High School in the town of Winder, in Barrow County east of Atlanta, sent a message to parents saying it was “currently in a hard lockdown after reports of gunfire,” according to US media.
“Law enforcement is here. Please do not attempt to come to the school at this time while officers work to secure the area,” it added.
The incident began at 10.20am local time (12.20am, Thursday, AEST).
“Casualties have been reported, however details on the number or their conditions is not available at this time,” Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Hospitals have been receiving patients with gunshot wounds, CNN has reported.
Students were seen gathering and huddling at a football field close to the school.
NBC News has reported that a suspect is now in custody.
Talking to the US’ ABC News student Sergio Caldera, 17, said he was in chemistry class when he heard gunshots.
“My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter,” Caldera said.
The student said they heard screams from outside as they “huddled up.”
In a statement from the White House, US President Joe Biden said he had been briefed on the “tragic shooting”.
“(The Biden) administration will continue co-ordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information”.
