China has taunted the United States over its deadly electricity crisis in Texas, in the midst of a freak cold snap blamed for several deaths.

In the aftermath of a deadly Texas cold snowstorm that’s left more than eight million people with continued water issues and killed at least 24, China has taunted America, deeming the crisis a “failure of capitalism” that’s affecting “desperate Americans”.

An opinion piece in communist mouthpiece the Global Timessaid a large number of Americans feel that the “current capitalist system” has “serious flaws” and “cannot help them with their concerns”.

“As a result, ruthlessness bewitches American society, continuing to spoil the national mood after the electoral mess last year and the Capitol Hill riot on January 6,” the piece continues.

“The COVID-19 epidemic raging across the US combined with natural disasters such as wild fires in California and the winter storm in Texas have unmasked the drawbacks of the US capitalist system’s true nature.”

According to the piece, Texans are suffering as a result of division between the Republican and Democratic parties.

“The still deepening division and struggles between the two parties are undoubtedly one reason why so many Texans couldn’t get help after being hit by the winter storm,” Institute of International Relations at the China Foreign Affairs University’s Professor Li Haidong wrote.

“Only ordinary people – no matter which party supporters they are – are suffering from the constant political wrangling.”

Prof Haidong adds that it’s difficult for the current US system “to engage in effective reforms”, but if reforms are not carried out, the country will continue to undergo emergencies.

Over the weekend, US President Joe Biden approved a major disaster declaration for the state, and will travel to Houston on Friday with First Lady Jill Biden.

The action unlocked federal funding for individuals in 77 Texan counties, grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.

“I thank President Biden for his assistance as we respond to impacts of winter weather across our state,” Republican Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement.

“While this partial approval is an important first step, Texas will continue to work with our federal partners to ensure all eligible Texans have access to the relief they need.”

Millions of Texans are still grappling with water-related issues, with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality estimating on Monday that 8.7 million residents had been advised to boil their water before consumption.

The San Antonio Water System – which serves more than two million customers – wrote in a tweet that while most of its notices have been lifted, “we will recommend that customers flush household pipes, ice makers and water fountains prior to using for drinking or cooking”.

The demand for fresh food and water across the state remains high.
