Video Shows Baton Rouge Police Shooting

A SECOND video has emerged showing the death of Alton Sterling, a black man shot dead by police outside a convenience store, as outrage grows in the US.

The shooting death of Alton Sterling, 37, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana — the latest in a series of fatal police shootings to be caught on video — has caused outrage in the US.

The video shows another angle and was recorded closer to the shooting by one of two white Baton Rouge police officers who were answering an emergency call about a man with a gun.

It is the second of two bystander videos that show the encounter.

One of the two police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Sterling was suspended two years ago after another black man was shot by police, reports the Daily Mail.

Howie Lake was placed on administrative leave in December 2014 after a suspect was shot multiple times as he tried to escape from the police.

Lake, 29, was among a group of six Baton Rouge cops placed on leave after registered sex offender Kevin Knight was shot by police following an alleged domestic incident.

However, the two white officers at the centre of the shooting may have acted within the law, a city prosecutor told CBS news.

“This is potentially a state-authorised killing,” East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore told CBS. “It gives law enforcement officers the authority and mandates them to kill when in defence of themselves or others.”

Moore’s statements run in direct contrast to outraged community members, who took to the streets on Wednesday night in angry protest over the dramatic shooting.

The White House says President Barack Obama is “deeply disturbed” by reports of the police shootings.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama is following the situations closely.

In the new 38-second film recording, Sterling is already on the ground, on his back as an officer kneels on the footpath to Sterling’s left.

The other officer appears to be straddling Sterling’s legs. Sterling can be seen from the chest up and his lower legs are also visible. His left arms and hands are not visible; his right arm is by his side.

After gunshots are heard, the camera pans to the right then back to Sterling, who has a large blood stain on his chest. The officer who was on his legs now lies on the footpath above Sterling’s head, his gun pointed.

As Sterling moves his left arm toward his face and then his chest, the officer appears to remove something from one of Sterling’s right pockets.

Baton Rouge police said Sterling was armed at the time he was killed and one witness said the officer removed a gun from Sterling’s pocket.

Sterling, a 37-year-old man who sold CDs and DVDs outside the store, died of his wounds. The officers involved in the shooting — Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II — have been placed on administrative leave.

A peaceful crowd of a hundred people kept vigil through the night outside the Baton Rouge convenience store where Sterling was shot.

At the Triple S Mart store, a mural of Sterling had already been painted on the side of the building.

“I’m so outraged,” prayer memorial organiser Keon Preston told The Advocate newspaper.

Sterling’s killing protests in the city and outrage nationwide over the latest case of alleged police brutality against black suspects.

Several celebrities have also joined the masses of people expressing their outrage at the killing.

Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams, who just last month gave a speech about the issue while accepting an award at the BET awards, was one of the many famous faces to speak out on Sterling’s death online.

Among some of the other celebrities that have weighed in on Sterlings death are actors Rashia Jones and Olivia Wilde.
