WHAT is usually a relaxing escape, has turned into fatal horror for Peri Sagun, 13, who died after a brick pillar collapsed onto a hammock at her home in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday.

According to a police report, one of the hammock ends was attached to a tree and the other side was attached to a 5 foot brick column.

Her sister Eren Sagun was in the hammock at the time of the incident and told authorities the brick column collapsed after Peri jumped in and her head was crushed by falling bricks.

The girls’ father performed CPR until medics arrived. Peri was rushed to Mercy Medical Centre but died a short time later.

St. Augustin Catholic School in Des Moines, where Peri was an honours student, released a statement saying she was a beloved pupil.

“The glow from Peri was felt when she entered a room, even to those who didn’t know her. But anyone who knew her did and will always love her,” it read.

The vibrant student would have graduated the following week so the school plans to give a diploma to her family, and Peri will be honoured at the graduation ceremony.
