UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson fined for breaching lockdown rules

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been fined for breaching lockdown rules.

Mr Johnson was accused of attending parties in Downing Street during Covid lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, but initially denied any wrongdoing.

However, the Metropolitan Police has now fined him for attending his birthday party - which was arranged by his wife Carrie - making him the first sitting British PM to be caught breaking the law.

Mr Johnson at one point was on the brink of losing his job as the ‘party-gate’ crisis escalated, however a delay in fines being handed out and attention turning to the war in Ukraine could save him his job.

The Chancellor Rishi Sunak will also be fined for breaking lockdown rules for attending the same party.

Mr Johnson told the House of Commons last year that “all guidance was followed completely” in Downing Street.

It was later said by an ally that Mr Johnsin had been “ambushed by a cake” at the illegal gathering.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called for Mr Johnson to quit.

“Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public. They must both resign.”

At least 50 people have been fined by the Metropolitan Police over a series of gatherings that took place in Downing Street during the UK’s lockdowns.

Most have been fined £50, however it is not yet clear how much the Prime Minister has been ordered to pay.
