The father of a 15-year-old girl who died by suicide after she was sexually assaulted by a priest is being investigated for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill the paedophile.
Italian priest Giuseppe Matarazzo, from Naples, was shot dead in July 2018, one month after he was released from jail where he served an 11 year and six month jail term for sexually abusing two sisters.
One of Matarazzo’s victims took her own life in 2008, the year after he was imprisoned.
She was just 15 at the time.
The girl’s father is now being investigated on suspicion of killing the sex abuser, 45, after his body was found in Benevento with five gunshot wounds on July 19, 2018.
He was reportedly repeatedly shot from a parked car.
Chief prosecutor Aldo Policastro confirmed that it was a “hired crime”.
Two other men, 30-year-old Generoso Nastam and Giuseppe Massaro, 55, were arrested on Friday and are also under investigation.
A probe into the finances of the suspects revealed that they received a payment of several thousand euros before the killing, according to Inter Napoli.
Both men deny any role in Matarazzo’s death.
Prosecutors believe the pair drove the car used to commit the crime, Italian news site Today reports.
Police recovered a 3.56 magnum they believe to be the weapon used in the crime and found a car covered nearby that led to the arrests.
