The attack happened at The Hart Space, where children on their school holidays were taking part in a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class.

Two adults were also injured.

Police were called to a property in Southport, in north west England near Liverpool, on Monday morning local time with armed police quickly swarming the area and declaring a “major incident”.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested and is police custody.

“At this early stage, inquiries are ongoing to establish the motive for this tragic incident and we would urge people not to speculate while the investigation is ongoing,” Merseyside Police in a statement which added that the incidents was not thought to be terror related.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the news was “horrendous and deeply shocking”.

Police said a 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The teen is from Banks in Lancashire, close to Southport. He was originally from Cardiff in Wales.

Local resident Colin Parry said: “The mothers are coming here now and screaming.

“It is like a scene from a horror movie.”

“Police have got him,” he added.

“It’s like something from America, not like sunny Southport.”

Witnesses have reported seeing around 20 police cars and several ambulances as well as a helicopter circling above.

One resident told the Liverpool Echo newspaper they had locked their doors and windows to “stay safe”.
