A worker at a Wisconsin medical facility has been fired for deliberately destroying more than 500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

Aurora Medical Center said in a statement obtained by Fox6 that the worker at their Grafton location admitted Wednesday to intentionally removing 57 vials of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine from a pharmacy refrigerator on Saturday.

Wednesday’s revelation came after the company’s initial review had attributed the incident to “unintended human error”.

“The individual in question today acknowledged that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration,” the company said in a statement.

“We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine. This was a violation of our core values, and the individual is no longer employed by us.”

In its initial statement on Monday, the company said the vials “were not replaced in the refrigerator after temporarily being removed to access other items”.

“While some of the vaccine was administered to team members on December 26 within the approved 12-hour post-refrigeration window, unfortunately, most of it had to be discarded due to the temperature storage requirements necessary to maintain its viability,” the statement said.

Local authorities have been made aware of the incident, the company said. Aurora Medical Center did not disclose a possible motive for the worker’s actions.

The FBI and FDA were also involved in the investigation, according to FOX6.

The spoiled vaccines were designated for Aurora Medical Center health care workers.
