More than 840,000 Australians vaccinated so far

New figures reveal how many vaccinations have been carried out in each state and territory following a feud with the federal government over the rollout.

Vaccine delays caused by Commonwealth ‘wanting to own’ the national rollout

Australia could be tipped to have more than one million people vaccinated this week as the coronavirus vaccine rollout accelerates.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the nation recorded no new local cases on Sunday, the 54th day this year.

New figures released on Sunday reveal at least 841,885 vaccinations have been made across the country, including more than 111,000 in among people in aged care homes.

“We are making enormous progress on that, so that progress is very, very heartening,” Mr Hunt said.

A new record of 79,000 jabs were given on Thursday, putting Australia in a prime position to reach the one million vaccination mark.

States and territory leaders have been in a feud with the Commonwealth following accusations they were holding back vaccines.

However, data released on Sunday showed how many vaccinations had now been completed by each jurisdiction. This includes:

NSW - 126,000 vaccinations

Victoria - 116,000 vaccinations

Queensland - 86,000 vaccinations

Western Australia - 56,500 vaccinations

Tasmania - 17,500

South Australia - 28,700

ACT - 12,500

Northern Territory - 8600

The Commonwealth has administered 387,605 vaccinations, while GPs have delivered more than 275,000.

Mr Hunt the supply of locally-manufactured AstraZeneca vaccines had enabled the rollout to accelerate.

He said the number of places offering vaccines would increase to 3000 by the end of this coming week.

“I thank all the Australians who have come forward and our GPs, states and territories and all those involved in the vaccinations,” Mr Hunt said.

But he remained tight lipped on when people in the first stage of the vaccine rollout would be completed, and when the next phase 2a would begin around the middle of the year.

Health Minister Greg Hunt has long defended the government’s handling of the vaccine rollout.
Health Minister Greg Hunt has long defended the government’s handling of the vaccine rollout.

Earlier in the day, Victorian Premier Tim Pallas said the state’s vaccination rollout was on track, and “in front of the Commonwealth target set for us”.

“We’ve made it clear to the Commonwealth that we think there needs to be greater transparency, in terms of their rollout,” Mr Pallas said.

“They are supposed to do two-thirds of the job of vaccination of the population. We’re charged with the responsibility of doing a third.

“We’re on track and it would appear that they are encountering difficulties.”

He said the state could provide greater assistance but the Commonwealth needed to “admit they have a problem”.
