Victoria, NSW Covid news live: Queensland Premier admits state powerless against Delta
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has made a frank admission about a simple problem that makes her state especially vulnerable to a Covid-19 outbreak.
Hello and welcome to Monday's Covid coverage.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has warned there is very little authorities can do to keep the highly-infectious Delta strain of Covid-19 from crossing the border from NSW.
The Premier was today commenting on the fact that nine freight drivers from NSW have spent time in the community in Queensland while infected.
Under current rules, freight workers are permitted to cross the NSW/Queensland border. They are tested every three days.
The Premier wants more to be done but a practical solution is hard to come by.
“The problem with testing every truck driver that comes into the state is we have thousands,” she said.
“You can imagine then the traffic jams that we would have."
It comes as Victoria records a new outbreak record 473 daily infections and NSW records 1257.
Despite the high caseload, Victorians could be enjoying eased restrictions in less than a week.
Premier Daniel Andrews promised Victorians that a modest easing of lockdown restrictions will kick in when the state reaches its 70 per cent first dose vaccination target.
This benchmark was expected to be hit on September 23, but a surge of residents getting vaccinated means these minor freedoms are now expected to kick in on September 19.
