A leading NSW epidemiologist says there may be a solution to consider before resorting to stricter lockdowns as a way of bringing the current Covid-19 outbreak under control.

Appearing on The Project, University of NSW Epidemiologist Marylouise McLaws said there is a solution to consider over stricter lockdowns.

"I think we need to do something different," Prof. McLaws said.

"Most of the cases are occurring either in the household or in the workplace and of course they're happening in the household because when you get infected in the workplace you take it home.

"So let's try and look at how to try and stop people acquiring it at work and one way of doing it is taking the best of rapid antigen tests."

Meanwhile,  a fully vaccinated Westmead Hospital worker has tested positive for Covid-19, forcing at least 36 colleagues into immediate isolation.

A spokesperson for the Western Sydney Local Health District confirmed to news.com.au that the worker had been at the hospital for three days while infectious.

“A Westmead Hospital staff member has tested positive to COVID-19," the statement read.

"The staff member worked for three days while infectious last week. The staff member was fully vaccinated."

It comes as NSW confirmed 207 new Covid-19 cases and the death of a man in his 90s from southwestern Sydney.
