Coronavirus Australia live updates: Gatherings of 10 people allowed in New York
New York has recorded 1700 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours but today Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a "shocking" new order.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued an executive order saying up to 10 people are now allowed to be together as long as they abide by other social distancing guidelines adopted during the coronavirus pandemic.
The order is a full relaxation on one imposed earlier in the week which allowed gatherings of as many as 10 people only for religious services and Memorial Day (May 25) commemorations.
Chair of New York City Council health committee, Mark D. Levine, responded to the new gathering allowances on Twitter.
"This shocking order, forced by a lawsuit, changes nothing about the risks associated with group gatherings - especially those held indoors," he wrote.
"We need the public to continue to be smart and use judgement about the risk of this virus, regardless of what the court has forced on us."
Back home, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard stressed young people are "not invincible" and need to be "responsible" with their new freedoms as we transition out of lockdown.
He said almost 40 per cent of the state's cases came from the age brackets of 20-29 and 30-39.
“Young people are enjoying these new freedoms, but with these freedoms come big responsibilities. If you’re going to keep your grandparents safe, you need to be really careful," Mr Hazzard said.
