Coronavirus Australia live updates: Daniel Andrews labelled 'friendless loser' in stunning attack

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has been labelled a "friendless loser" over his unwillingness to reopen the state, in a stunning attack.

House prices could tumble by up to 30 per cent in the wake of the coronavirus

A Victorian MP has refused to backdown on his extraordinary attacks on Premier Daniel Andrews, who he labelled a "friendless loser".

Liberal frontbencher Tim Smith has repeatedly criticised the premier's slowness to ease coronavirus restrictions and reopen the state, in line with other jurisdictions.

But he took it to a colourful new level, slamming Mr Andrews as a "friendless loser", sparking condemnation. And he's refused to backdown.

Meanwhile, dire jobs data released today showed almost 600,000 people lost their job in the month of April alone, pushing the unemployment rate to 6.2 per cent.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison Morrison described it as "terribly shocking" and a "tough day" for the nation.

"It is important on a day like today that we remember to support each other again, but also to seek to take heart and to encourage each other in hope."
