THE man who killed 12 people in a Colorado movie theatre gun attack has told a psychiatrist he turned suicidal thoughts into homicidal ones.

JAMES Holmes says his "mind was kind of falling apart" and that he began to have homicidal thoughts months before he killed 12 people and injured 70 others in a Colorado movie theatre.

IN a videotaped interview presented at his murder trial, Holmes tells a state-appointed psychiatrist he contracted mononucleosis in late 2011, and became depressed and lacked energy partly because of a break-up with a girlfriend in early 2012.
