GALLIPOLI hero John Simpson Kirkpatrick has been remembered in his hometown in north east England 100 years after he was killed on the Turkish peninsula.

JOHN Simpson Kirkpatrick has been remembered 100 years after he was killed in Gallipoli as a war hero who epitomised both the spirit of north east England and a young Australia.

IN Australia he's referred to as Simpson and is always mentioned in the same breath as his donkey - on which he carried injured diggers during the bloody 1915 campaign on the Turkish peninsula.
