A MAGNITUDE-6.9 earthquake has struck a chain of islands off Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency says.

A MAGNITUDE-6.9 earthquake has struck a chain of islands off Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

THE epicentre of the quake, which struck at 2219 (AEST), was located near the Ogasawara islands, which are about 1,000km south of Tokyo.
