Melbourne man dies on descent from Everest Base Camp
UPDATE: A Melbourne father and businessman who died descending from Mount Everest base camp has been described as a respected leader.
A MELBOURNE father and corporate businessman who died climbing a Mount Everest base camp has been described as a respected leader with a sharp wit and taste for fine wine.
Matthew Jones was trekking with three other Victorians in his Sherpa-led team when he fell sick at the Nepal base camp on Thursday night.
He experienced breathing difficulties on the 5300m descent the next day, when he died.
The mourning family of the Glen Iris man today declined to comment.
Mr Jones was a “widely respected” and “loved” employee of IT giant Intel for 16 years and tributes from his colleagues and customers have poured in.
“No words can express the void Matt will leave at Intel. He was a unique character and will be remembered for not only his great work ethic and leadership but also his sharp wit and passion for good wine, fancy dress parties, history, travel and ‘vexillology’,” Intel Australia managing director Kate Burleigh said.
“Matt was truly one of a kind who will be greatly missed. The Intel team is mourning the loss of our friend and colleague.”
It’s understood Mr Jones was not attempting to trek to the Everest summit, rather the Nepal base camp.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said consular advice was being provided.
“Due to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further information,” the spokesperson said.
Intel in a statement said it was “providing full support” to Mr Jones’s wife and family.
“We ask that you respect the family’s wishes and let them mourn in private at this time,” the statement read.
