COMPLETE and utter devastation.
Aerial footage, filmed by Palestinian production company Media Town, has shown scenes of a crippled Gaza, almost completely demolished by seven weeks of intense shelling attacks.
The footage, uploaded to YouTube late last week, captures the destructive nature of war as it pans through large swathes of the war-torn area of Al-Shejaiya, a suburb of Gaza city which took a direct hit in the attacks against Israel.
In July this year, the city buckled under one of Israel’s heftiest attacks under Operation Protective Edge. At least 60 civilians were killed and thousands of others were forced to flee their homes.
According to Shelter Cluster, at least 17,000 homes were destroyed in the latest blasts, adding to the 75,000-strong shortage of homes in the Gaza strip.
It is believed the area will take decades to be to be rebuilt at a price tag of almost AU$6.5bn.
Fighting has come to a halt after a ceasefire was agreed between the two parties.
In the seven weeks of clashes, more than 2,100 Palestinians died, in comparison to 68 Israelis.
Gaza’s lack of defence against Israeli missiles has crushed the city, while Israel is still standing in comparison.
Israel says its Iron Dome, which intercepts enemy missiles before they reach the ground, is 90 per effective against enemy fire.
Footage on social media shows Israelis running for cover as The Code Red siren alerts citizens to impending rocket attacks.
The United States has contributed $250 million to Israel’s defence this year alone, and is set to contribute another $376 million in the next year.
“The truth is that Iron Dome works, repeatedly and reliably,” said Israeli missile defence expert Uzi Rubin.
