Thousands of people have been snatched and ‘disappeared’ by authorities in China for being too critical, too rich, and sometimes for no reason at all. So why are they doing it?
Tech billionaire Jack Ma is just one of these figures to have vanished from public eye, following comments made against the Government at a business conference in 2020.
WHAT HAPPENED TO JACK MA?
Ma was summoned to Beijing to meet CCP officials, who then pulled the plug on the IPO launch of his Ant Group fintech, which would’ve been one of the biggest stock market launches in history.
It doesn’t matter how rich and powerful a person is, nor how anonymous and low-profile they are - anyone who dares criticise the Communist Party of China or not embrace its values can be targeted.
WHO ELSE IS BEING TARGETED?
Billionaire actress Zhao Wei was suddenly erased from Chinese social media and streaming platforms, for no apparent crime at all – just for being popular, and potentially for becoming too cosy with China’s greatest cultural enemies.
OTHER DISAPPEARANCES
In 2018, actress Fan Bingbing suddenly disappeared from her high-profile life without warning. Several months later, a humbled Bingbing made a public apology for not paying her taxes.
Government control appears to be the key reason for the disappearances. The message is clear: No matter who you are, or how much money you have - the Communist Party can get you.
