Tonga enters lockdown after recording its first ever Covid case

Twenty months into the pandemic, Tonga has finally recorded its firstofficial case of Covid.
Located roughly 200km from Australia’s east coast, the country is now heading into a snap lockdown.
Residents on Tonga's main island will go into a seven-day lockdown, despite no evidence of community transmission.
Domestic travel has come to a standstill and residents have been asked to stop non-essential work and stay at home. Only essential services will continue to operate.
It comes after a passenger from New Zealand tested positivefor the virus in hotel quarantine, despite being fully vaccinated and testing negative prior to boarding a flight.
Masses have gathered in vaccination hubs in light of the Pacific island nation’s first Covid-19 case.
In just days, the country's vaccination rate has risen from 35 per cent to 62 per cent – nearly doubling.
