Every single day, tens of thousands of Aussie tradies are exposed to an invisible risk they are doing almost nothing to protect themselves against.

The survey of 600 tradies found

89%

89%

of them spent time outdoors on a typical workday.

Despite this a quarter said they rarely or only occasionally wore sunscreen while working outside — even during the summer months.

The YouGov survey found most tradies were not confident at explaining how UV works or the level at which they should protect themselves.

They were more confident explaining the rules of their favourite sport, how to cook a perfect steak on the barbecue or how to set up surround sound for their TV.

Almost half of the tradies surveyed spent more than four hours a day outside, making them more vulnerable to the risk of developing skin cancer than those who work indoors.

Around a third had been treated for skin cancer or a suspicious spot, and more than half knew another tradesperson who had been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Around 2000 Australians die every year from skin cancer. Among men it is estimated to be the second most commonly diagnosed cancer, second only to prostate cancer.

In order to remind tradies to put on sunscreen, a free SunSmart Tradie Toolbox is available with posters that can be downloaded from www.cancer.org.au and displayed next to safety signage on job sites.
