The start of a new year beckons a refresh. Whilst the spring clean ranges from a home redecorating to a wardrobe purge, in matters of beauty a reinvention appeals—the universal allure of a makeover.

What hair trends, then, will define the new year that lies before us? In 2022, it seems, many looks of the year prior won’t so much as disappear as undergo an evolution. Hair industry veteran Barney Martin reveals what to expect for the season ahead.

The update to previous shapes will be "the introduction of more layered ends and a looser structure, moving away from the blunt cut ends that we have been used to," Martin says.

Layered bobs

The statement-making blowout, à la Claudia Schiffer, is making a voluminous comeback. “This trend taps into the post-lockdown excitement and glamour—of not being at home in leisurewear, for example.”

’90s supermodel

The retro shag gets a modern makeover with the new cut embracing both a ’70s and ’90s sensibility. Natural waves are key themes as Martin suggests, “grown out bangs or a curtain fringe will lend a ’70s vibe, or you can pair the cut with a shorter fringe for a more ’90's take.”

The new shag

Gone are the tousled, undone textures of Parisian provenance, as we welcome head-to-toe polish. There’s no shame in looking purposefully put-together, and Martin prophesies that luxurious, glossy hair “with a mirror-like shine” will reign supreme.

High shine

Graphic colour of Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish-origin is inescapable. Our obsession with living colour continues, and Martin says clients have requested a pop of pink or purple in particular. “People have the opportunity to try something that they maybe would not have considered otherwise.”

Pinks and purples

New year, new 'do.
