The Aussie suburbs set to swelter through extreme summer temps

Words: Charis ChangProduced By: Angus Mead

Australia's average summertime temperatures are set to soar over the next few decades, painting a frightening future for Australians if we don't lower emissions by 2050.

Greater Western Sydney is set to be among the worst-impacted areas. Home to around one in 11 Australians, many of its suburbs are slowly becoming heat sinks some say won’t be safe to live in.

Temperatures in Sydney’s west can already be 10 degrees higher than those along the coast, and data now shows the frequency of very hot days in the west are expected to increase at double the rate of those along the coast.

Research provided to news.com.au from the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub determined that these areas are forecast to experience an average of four extra days of extreme heat by around 2050.

This is in contrast to the Sutherland Shire of Sydney, which is only expected to experience one extra day of temperatures over 35C.

Doctors for the Environment Australia, NSW chair Dr Kim Loo, says extreme heat isolates people and impacts the activities they can do, such as sports and work, as well as children’s ability to learn at school.

Dr Loo said heat can impact people’s mental health and that suicide and domestic violence both increase during heatwaves.

People can tolerate a degree of heat during the day but if it’s hot at night, that’s when fatalities increase.

The increasing awareness of the dangers of heat have seen unions such as the CFMEU advise its members to leave work sites when temperatures reach 35C.

The Climate Council also released a report this year that suggested heatwaves in Sydney and Melbourne could reach highs of 50C by 2040.

Dr Loo has also called for ‘smarter building’ of houses to tackle the heat, with things such as lighter materials used for roofing, thicker glass and more greenery.

The disaster is the absence of planning in this area. We can’t just keep building buildings (that are) dangerous for people to live in.
