Supermodel Adut Akech’s plea for the fashion world

Sudanese-Australian supermodel Adut Akech has opened up about why she’s backing a new Vogue campaign to save the future of Australian fashion.

The supermodel, who has walked for luxury labels Fendi and Max Mara, is fronting the campaign to breathe new life into Australia’s retail industry, as it begins to recover from the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“I love being able to support Australian designers and brands especially at the moment when the fashion community needs our help to recover from the global pandemic.”

The campaign signals the return of retail, dining out and the impending post-lockdown party season across the nation.

As the end of Covid lockdown approaches, Vogue Australia editor-in-chief Edwina McCann says the new campaign aims to “encourage spending and reinvigorate the retail and fashion industry”.

The event was originally launched by US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in 2009, in response to the global financial crisis.

COVID lockdowns have weighed heavily on Australia's retailers as sales continue to drop for a third straight month. Retail turnover fell 1.7 per cent to $29.3 billion in August alone.

“In 2021, faced with new Covid-enforced restrictions, we will return to an online format designed to inject much-needed optimism and provide significant economic benefit.”
