How world’s biggest solar farm will turn Australia into a green superpower

Australian tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes is building the world’s biggest solar farm in the Northern Territory, as part of the nation’s move towards a net zero future.

The solar farm, planned for the Newcastle Waters cattle station 750km south of Darwin, would send dispatchable renewable energy between Australia and Singapore, backed by up to 42 gigawatt-hours of storage.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

Australia has always been a global energy exporter. But the key difference here is we would be exporting renewable energy sources, rather than fossil fuels.

WHAT'S CHEAPER?

Renewable energy is much cheaper than coal-fired generation, which is unreliable and prone to frequent breaking. Energy sources like wind and solar get cheaper every year due to scale, and regular speed and quality upgrades.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Cannon-Brookes says the Sun Cable is just the first of many. He predicts there will soon be power lines from Australia to all over Asia, with our northern neighbours buying our cheap and abundant solar energy.

The tech guru's final message to Australians? Remember that the world is changing rapidly - and be open to embracing that change.
