What does the Queen’s death mean for Aussie cash?

Words: Courtney Gould | Animations: Andrew Bedford

Australia’s currency is set to undergo a massive rebrand following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

But while King Charles III has taken the throne, Her Majesty’s face will continue to appear on the $5 Aussie bank note.

The effigy of King Charles III will begin popping up on the back of newly-minted coins, but in an interesting change, he will now be facing the left.

It’s part of a tradition that dates back to the reign of Charles II in the 1600s, and states that each new monarch must alternate in the direction they gaze.

The Queen has been the only monarch to feature on Australia’s decimal currency, which was introduced in 1966.

The monarch’s effigy has backed Australian coins since we transitioned into decimal currency, away from shillings and pounds in 1966.
