Explained: What Aussies can do about Optus hack

That's Optus CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin's message to millions of customers who have potentially been affected by the latest hacking scandal.

Last week, it was revealed the personal information of at least 9.8 million current and former Optus customers had been hacked, including names, dates of birth, passport and Medicare numbers, driver's licence details and email addresses.

A person using the handle "Optusdata" then demanded $US1 million ($A1.55 million) in ransom, payable in the cryptocurrency Monero.

On September 20, the hacker released the customer records of 10,000 customers, with a note saying they would release the details of 10,000 more customers per day unless their demands were met.

While the hacker appears to have since backtracked, Optus is urging customers to be extra vigilant with phishing scams following the data breach.

Optus is contacting customers chiefly via email, but those whose licence or passport numbers were compromised may have been contacted by SMS. Customers are being urged to contact Optus themselves.
