A federal inquiry investigating Rio Tinto’s destruction of ancient Australian sites has called for several key changes to protect sacred sites across the country.

The sacred caves in the Juukan Gorge, in Western Australia, reveals human habitation dating back to the last ice age - putting them among Australia’s most significant archaeological sites.

Despite receiving urgent appeals from traditional owners, the mining giant said the site was already strapped with explosives and it was too unsafe to stop the blast.

The decision caused international fury and outraged traditional owners and Australians acrossthe country.

Rio Tinto’s actions were inexcusable and an affront, not only to the PKKP but to all Australians.

After 16 months of hearings, the Joint Standing Committee on Northern Australia made final recommendations focusing onurgent changes to federal law.

Including calls for traditionalowners to be given “primarydecision-making power” regarding their cultural heritage.

Destruction of the 46,000-year-old caves at Juukan Gorge was a tragedy and the WA Government is working hard to ensure better legislative protections are afforded to our sacred cultural heritage sites.
