Colouring your hair is a big step—but if you’ve decided that you want to go down the dye path, welcome.

Here, we talk to former Australian Hairdresser of the Year, Anthony Nader from Raw Hair, about the dos and don’ts of colouring.

"Never go beyond two to three shades lighter or darker. Opt for a non-chemical application, which won't dry out strands."

Does colouring your hair damage it?

"It's simple... ask your hairdresser for their advice. Don't ever play 'hairdresser' at home."

How do I decide what colour I want?

"No. I've been in the hair industry for 30 years now and never heard of a 'male-only' colour range."

Is men's hair dye different from women's hair dye?

"A semi-permanent lasts one month. Permanent dye regrows, so you'll need your roots touched up religiously every 3-4 weeks."

How long will my hair stay dyed?

"If you’re young or in uni and want to experiment... go for it. But if you're in a workplace environment, make an appointment at your salon."

Should I dye my hair myself or get someone to do it?

"Colour build-up is common, so be careful. Over time, your hair may snap off because of excess colour that has been applied."

Can I dye my hair if it's long?

"Always aim for a shade lighter than a shade darker. You can always go darker slowly, and in this way, your hair will stay looking natural."

What hair dye should I use to hide greys?

"Use a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically for coloured hair. This will ensure hydration and longevity."

How do I take care of my hair after it has been dyed?

Now go, and dye hard.
