AFL dumps dreaded test over fat-shaming fears for draftees

The AFL has reportedly outlawed standard skinfold testing on draft prospects out of fears the test is a form of body-shaming.
It was reported the league stepped in to ban teams from using the body-fat measuring tool ahead of the 2021 Draft.
Talented teenagers have been tested physically and mentally in recent months ahead of the draft, where the 18 clubs will pick prospective AFL players.
It has now emerged recruiters have been left bewildered by an edict from AFL House to not take skinfold measurements.
The skinfold test is a blunt measurement that rates the body-fat percentage of players by pinching skin at different areas of the body.
Channel 7 has now revealed the skinfold test was not used during the Combine because of the league’s concerns about its potential for body-shaming players.
The decision to ban the test was reportedly done quietly behind the scenes before last month’s draft camps in QLD, Victoria, Tasmania, SA and WA.
West Coast premiership player Will Schofield reacted to the report, slamming the ban as a “joke” on social media.

Don’t get me wrong, I hated skinfold tests. It’s an antiquated measure of body fat percentage. However, to remove it to protect player well-being is a farken joke.
While the skinfold test wasn’t used this year, the draft class still did a 2km time trial, an agility test, a 20m sprint, a standing vertical jump and a running vertical jump.
