Sydney Airport delays as strong winds close runways
Passengers travelling through Sydney Airport can expect delays after some runways were closed due to heavy winds during the busy Easter long weekend.
Strong winds have forced the closure of some runways at Sydney Airport, causing flight delays during the hectic Easter long weekend travel period.
Only the east-west runway has been in operation for most of Saturday after the strong winds forced the airport to close to the two north-south runways.
A Sydney Airport spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire that both international and domestic passengers can expect some delays throughout the day.
“Since midmorning we have been on single runway operations,” she said.
“Outbound services are delayed by between about 20 to 40 minutes this afternoon, while most inbound flights are running to schedule.
“We are anticipating single runway operations to stay in place until approximately 8pm.”
While no flights have been cancelled, passengers are being encouraged to speak to their airlines to get the latest information on the status of their flights.
The westerly winds are currently 30 to 45 km/h at Sydney Airport and are forecast to decrease to 25 to 35 km/h in the late evening, according Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast.
The delays come amid a busy weekend of travel, with millions of people expected to pass through domestic and international terminals across the weekend.
More to come.
