Hidden camera scandal engulfs Bali clubs

A sexual predator stalking some of Bali’s most popular hotspots to secretly film men while they use the toilet has expressed a fondness for Australian tourists.

On Thursday, news.com.au revealed details of the staggering operation of a prolific pervert who has amassed several thousand photos and videos of unsuspecting victims over at least the past year, which he is selling online to hordes of subscribers.

Those revelations have now sparked a police investigation in Indonesia, assisted by Australian authorities.

Among the hundreds, if not thousands of men violated – many of whom are Aussies visiting the island paradise – are high-profile figures, including two professional football players.

The culprit proudly boasts about ensnaring the famous men, and the description of ‘packages’ of imagery and vision indicates there are possibly more high-profile victims.

Further analysis of his activities on the encrypted messaging network Telegram has uncovered disturbing details about his methodical modus operandi.

It appears he wears some kind of hidden or concealed camera on his body, judging by his movements in videos and several instances of victims seeming to innocently interact with him.

He positions himself at urinals inside FINNS Beach Club – a popular venue co-owned by Australian former Sydney Swans star and multi-millionaire businessman Tony Smith, who is not accused of any wrongdoing.

The predator appears to stay in one or two spots for long periods of time to maximise the number of victims he can exploit.

At his other frequent hunting ground, the nearby bar Old Man’s just down the road, he films from a position at the end of a urinal trough.

However, in that bathroom, he also records men while they urinate and defecate in a toilet stall, lurking over a concealed position over the top of a dividing wall.

In several posts, the predator indicates a preference for Australian men, lifting social media images shared by tourists who he speaks about hoping to encounter in the clubs’ bathrooms.

He also uses an emoji of the Australian flag on particular posts to indicate to subscribers that the man violated is an Aussie.

Much of the content is shared with captions, often sinister in nature, such as “whether they like it or not” or “we’ll always get the very best angle, stable, high quality video and all guys at one time”.

The mammoth number of videos and images suggest the man has been active in both clubs for some time.

And chillingly, in several instances, he has managed to stalk some of his victims on social media, likely using location tags from Instagram and Snapchat, lifting their photographs and matching them up to his collection of graphic images.

One such compilation shared shows a social media image of a man who appears to have just proposed to his partner alongside a graphic photo of the man urinating, with the caption “Happy for her, happy for us”.

Management from FINNS Beach Club and Old Man’s bar have not responded to repeated requests for comment.

A public Telegram channel used to promote the predator’s wares was created on October 6 after a previous profile distributing similar content was deleted.

In a little over two months, that new account has shared countless explicit images and videos – several hundred at least, but likely more – with the creator boasting about his ability to capture “straight hotties”.

More than 8560 people follow its daily updates, where at least a dozen new victims are exposed.

In addition, the man manages several private channels for subscribers who pay up to $275 each for “VIP access” to full-length and uncensored content.

Those channels are categorised by themes – beach club patrons, nightclub patrons, men who are defecating, and “straight bait” – or unwitting social media users who have been catfished and tricked into sending nude photos and videos.

In one channel, the man shares the results of covert recordings taken inside a public shower – the location of which is yet to be identified.

When contacted by an account purporting to be an interested customer, the man promoted 11 different private channels, collectively containing more than 8300 images and videos.

In a statement, Telegram insisted its team of moderators regularly monitor the platform for content that breaches its terms of service.

However, a day after being provided all of the predator’s channel names, they remain active.

“Since its creation, Telegram has actively moderated harmful content on its platform, including the publishing of non-consensual pornography,” it said.

More than one million Australians travel to Bali each year, comprising the largest share of all foreign nationals spending time on the Indonesian island.

In the busy month of March alone, some 260,000 Aussies travelled there.

Requests for comment to tourism authorities in Bali have not been responded to, nor have repeated requests to Indonesian police.

However, a spokesperson for the Australian Federal Police told news.com.au: “The AFP is aware of the account and has referred the matter to the Indonesian National Police. As it is an ongoing investigation no further comment will be made at this time.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it “stands ready” to provide any required consular assistance.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Federal Police are liaising closely with Indonesian authorities regarding this matter,” the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said the sharing of intimate visual content without the consent of the person depicted constituted image-based abuse.

“It includes pictures or videos where someone is naked or partly naked or involved in a private activity, such as using the toilet or showering,” the spokesperson said.

“The eSafety Commissioner can help if a person is the victim of image-based abuse and we encourage Australians experiencing it to report it to eSafety.gov.au/report.

“As part of our powers, we can require platforms to remove this content when it is reported to us by the person targeted or someone authorised to make a report on their behalf.

“If you have been targeted, please don’t go through this alone but seek support from people you trust or from a 24/7 support service, like Lifeline or Beyond Blue.”
