Victoria tightens border rules with Sydney, new WA measures for Queensland

Local Covid-19 cases in Australia’s largest east coast states just ahead of the school holidays have thrown the borders into chaos. Here’s where you can travel.

Australia’s borders have been thrown into chaos just ahead of the school holidays with local Covid-19 cases emerging in the nation’s largest east coast states.

Victoria tightened its rules with Sydney late on Sunday night after the city’s eastern suburbs cluster grew to nine, while Western Australia introduced new measures for Queensland following a new local case there.

Melburnians hoping to travel to Queensland for a warm winter getaway once the school holidays begin on Friday also face a nervous wait with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk yet to commit to reopening the border.

South Australia adjusted its rules for travellers from Sydney on Saturday and the state still has restrictions in place for people coming from Victoria.

Here’s the state of play for arrivals into each state and territory:

VICTORIA

Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton has declared the seven NSW local government areas of Sydney, Waverley, Woollahra, Bayside, Canada Bay, Inner West and Randwick as orange zones.

That means travellers into Victoria from those regions must obtain an orange zone permit from Service Victoria.

Orange zone permit holders must isolate on arrival, get tested, and stay isolated until they receive a negative result.

Professor Sutton has advised against “non-essential travel” to Victoria from these areas out of an abundance of caution.

People in Victoria who have been to the exposure sites listed by both NSW and Queensland health need to follow the listed advice and contact the Victorian department of health on 1300 651 160.

All arrivals into Victoria must apply for a travel permit at Service Victoria, even if they are entering from a green zone.

All other areas, including New Zealand, are green zones under Victoria’s permit system.

QUEENSLAND

Queensland has declared the NSW local government area of Waverley in Sydney’s eastern suburbs a Covid-19 hot spot.

All of metropolitan Melbourne has also been declared a hot spot by the state government.

Those who have been to a Covid-19 hot spot in the past 14 days or since the start date identified for the hotspot (whichever is shorter) will not be allowed to enter Queensland, except for a limited range of people who can enter for essential purposes.

Ms Palaszczuk said last Thursday the travel ban on people from Melbourne would remain in place for another seven days with a decision likely to be made on Thursday as to whether Melburnians will be allowed to enter the Sunshine State for the school holidays.

Regional Victoria and the rest of NSW are not Covid-19 hot spots but are in states with a hot spot meaning people who want to enter Queensland need to apply for a border declaration pass.

All other areas, including New Zealand, are green zones but all people entering Queensland now need to complete a travel declaration.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Any person who has been in the NSW local government area of Waverley in the past 14 days but not before June 11 cannot enter South Australia.

The state government updated its travel restrictions for the Sydney eastern suburbs region on Saturday night.

People arriving in South Australia after 2pm on June 17, including essential travellers, South Australian residents and people genuinely relocating, who have been at a Covid-19 exposure site in NSW are also not permitted to enter.

Travellers from greater Melbourne are also not permitted to enter South Australia, except South Australian residents, people relocating, people escaping domestic violence and essential travellers who must self-quarantine for 14 days and get tested on days one, five and 13.

The exception also applies to people from Waverley in NSW.

People entering South Australia from regional Victoria must get a Covid-19 test and isolate until they receive a negative result.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

WA Health issued updated its advice on Sunday afternoon for travellers who recently returned from Queensland.

Chief health officer Dr Andrew Robertson said anyone who has recently arrived into Western Australia from Queensland and had been to one of the listed exposure sites was required to get tested immediately and self-quarantine for 14 days and have a test on day 11.

The same advice still applies for exposure sites in NSW.

Anyone travelling to Western Australia from Victoria must complete a G2G Pass and complete 14 days of self or hotel quarantine.

Arrivals from all other states and territories, and New Zealand, must complete a G2G Pass and declaration.

TASMANIA

Anyone who has been in metropolitan Melbourne in the 14 days before their arrival into Tasmania is not be permitted to enter unless approved as an essential traveller.

Those travelling from regional Victoria do not have to quarantine but must register through the Tas e-Travel system to confirm they have not been to any exposure sites.

People who visited the exposure sites in Queensland, the ACT and NSW are also not allowed to enter Tasmania.

All other areas, including New Zealand, have been designated low risk and travellers can register their travel and contact details through the Tas e-Travel system no more than three days before they arrive.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

Anyone travelling to the Northern Territory from greater Melbourne must complete 14 days of quarantine at the Alice Springs or Howard Springs quarantine facilities.

Those in the NT who have visited a tier 1 exposure site in Victoria must immediately get tested and undertake 14 days of quarantine in their home or at a suitable place.

Any person defined as a close contact by NSW or Queensland health authorities must also immediately get tested and complete 14 days of quarantine in their home or at a suitable place.

Those identified as a casual contact must get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result.

Any person who has arrived or who will arrive in the Northern Territory who has been in the ACT since June 14 must check the exposure sites at least once per day and comply with the directions.

All other arrivals must complete a border entry form.

ACT

Travellers from Victoria to the ACT must complete a declaration form within 24 hours prior to their arrival.

The requirements have been extended and will remain in place until 11.59pm on June 24.

Those who have visited exposure sites in Victoria, NSW and Queensland must follow the directions of the relevant health departments.

Anyone in the ACT who visited Bondi Junction Westfield on the dates and times specified need to immediately complete an online declaration form, get tested and isolate until a negative test result is received.

NSW

The NSW government has imposed no travel restrictions.

NEW ZEALAND

Quarantine free travel from Victoria to New Zealand remains paused.

Quarantine free travel from NSW and Queensland to New Zealand is continuing but those who have visited any exposure sites cannot travel until at least 14 days after they were at the venue.
