Woman’s complaint about Delta Airlines backfires on Tik Tok
A woman who missed a flight while trying to get to her best friend’s wedding was forced to issue an explanation after thousands turned against her.
An American woman en route to her best friend’s wedding has copped backlash on social media after appearing to take aim at Delta Airlines for stopping her from making the nuptials on time.
Abbie Adcox shared a brief eight-second video of herself on Tik Tok sitting at an airport terminal in tears with the caption: “Just a girl who missed her 5am flight and won’t make it to her besties wedding because delta sucks.”
With no other context given, the video quickly generated severe backlash — with more than five million views and thousands of comments suggesting Ms Adcox was to blame for leaving the flight to the day of the wedding — and not the fault of the airline.
In response to the backlash, Ms Adcox issued two subsequent videos explaining the situation — appearing to back-pedal from the initial attack on Delta.
“I did not expect people to see that video, I thought just my friends would and we would laugh about the sucky situation and make the most of it,” she said to the camera.
“I do want to preface that I am not trying to blame Delta. When I made this Tik Tok I truly thought that just my friends would see it and we would just be like ‘oh, this sucks’.”
Ms Adcox said that despite captioning her video with “delta sucks” she didn’t intentionally mean to take aim at the airline.
“I did not try to drag Delta through the mud … of course I know that I could’ve had better time management.,” she said.
“In the end no matter the circumstances of what happened, it is my fault.”
Ms Adcox said that there were some circumstances that “did not help” her missed flight, including extensive queues at airport security as well as a “broken machine” presumably processing carry-on baggage.
However, she explained that arriving just one hour before her flight is what caused the biggest hurdle in her journey.
“I have flown a lot and I have never, ever got to an airport before an hour or a little bit over an hour before my flight leaves,” she explained.
“And I have never, ever had an issue. And maybe that is something I need to learn from this experience.
“The reason why I said Delta sucks was because I got to the gate prior to the 15-minute time of them closing the gate. The gate agent knew that and I think she was having a bad day or something … because she wouldn’t let me on when she very well could of.”
Ms Adcox said the gate possibly closed earlier, and that is why she wasn’t allowed on, explaining that is why she said “Delta sucks” in the caption.
“They didn’t give me a chance to get on and after explaining my situation and yes of course it’s still on me but it was just tough that the gate agent didn’t help me out,” she said.
Addressing the thousands of haters on social media, many of whom blamed the young traveller for the missed flight, Ms Adcox said she is not an “idiot, contrary to popular belief”.
“I would never fly the day of a wedding if there weren’t circumstances prohibiting me from going earlier and there were,” she said, adding she had another wedding in a different state to attend the day before her best friend’s event.
“These situations are hard and I wish I could’ve got there earlier and made it work but it is what it is,” she added.
“I sprinted to the gate … obviously I could’ve planned it a little better.”
As stipulated on its website, Delta advises passengers to arrive at the airport “at least two hours prior to departure” for travel within the United States.
“For most airports, you must be checked in at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time,” the airline’s website reads.
It is understood Ms Adcox made it to a portion of her friend’s wedding, and has since praised Delta Airlines as “awesome”.
