‘Why?’: Italian expat shocked by Australian habit

An Italian living on the Gold Coast has called out a habit Australians do in the morning that has her baffled.

SA tourism provides special adventures outside of the ‘city experience’

Australia used to blow tourists’ minds with its spiders and crocodiles.

That all seems very ‘80s now though, with an Italian tourist this week revealing that early morning exercise clubs, vaping and bare feet on the bus are the things absolutely “sending” her, Escape reports.

The tourist, who is called Sacconji, and who is living on the Gold Coast, has taken to TikTok to reveal the common Australian habits that are “sending her into a coma” (read: surprising her greatly).

Among the habits is Australian young people’s penchant for early morning exercise.

“First of all guys, you wake up so early,” Sacconji explained in the video, which has now been seen 41.7 thousand times.

“Because of my job I used to go out in the morning at 5. While I’m walking and eating my biscuit, I swear I saw plenty of people walking with their dogs.”

She also said she saw people running – not just old people – and she saw “young people in their 20s [running], and not by themselves.”

Shocked, Sacconji continued: “They run in a group, so that means you have to organise these things, you know, with your friends – ‘Guys, what we going to do tomorrow? Just wake up, let’s wake up at 4 and go for a run.’”

“Why at 4am? Why not do it in the evening like normal people?”

A couple of people hit back at this in the comment section, writing things like: “Because on the East coast we have sunrises, not sunsets” and “We also work 5-7 days a week 8am – 5:30pm with no siestas.”

She also talks about the cultural quirks of nicotine consumption, saying: “Cigarettes are really expensive in Australia. We all know that you’re a f***ing millionaire or you cannot afford [cigarettes].”

“So people when they come here just start vaping like … what’s happening to me? And guys these things will seriously send anyone into a coma – not just only Italian people.

“They’re f***ing good. I love it … at least it will be a really, really sweet coma.”

Sacconji then moved on to our feet, saying she was surprised to realise that “everyone really enjoys going out without their shoes.”

“You don’t know why, I don’t know why, they just do that.

“People without shoes, they’re not crazy person, they are just like regular person like me, it’s just normal for them.”

Finally, Sacconji said she was pleasantly shocked to realise how polite everyone was in Australia, saying: “[They are] so polite, even in the morning, night time, people that are working, everyone just ask to you: ‘hey, how are you?’

“OK, they don’t care about the answer, but they are really, really nice – we are not used to that – you have to understand guys, in Italy, no one asks ‘how are you?”

“Of course, if you ask me how I’m feeling [in Italy] it’s because you’re my friend.

“No, no, no – here everyone [does it].”

As for our supermarkets, the less said the better though, with Sacconji (in another video) explaining our canned spaghetti and “Australian mozzarella” would also put most Italians “into a coma” (and not in a good way).
