US expat living in Australia on why ‘everyone hates Americans’
A US woman who has been living in Australia for six years has unleashed on fellow Americans, revealing why they’re “hated”.
A US woman living in Australia has ripped into fellow Americans, begging them to “educate” themselves after becoming embarrassed at how the world views them.
Tay Marin, who has lived in Australia for six years, shared a TikTok three days ago on why “everyone hates us Americans”.
It has since gone viral, clocking almost two million views.
Tay explains that Americans are viewed as “ loud and obnoxious”, “uneducated” and don’t know how to take a joke, begging them to familiarise themselves with the rest of the world.
However, her advice hasn’t boded well with Americans who have since fired back.
“You guys have no idea how the rest of the world views us, all right,” she began the now viral clip.
“We are not top dog – we are seen as loud and obnoxious. Seriously quiet down – you’re a level 10 I am gonna need you to be a level 4.
“We don’t need to express all of our thoughts out loud.”
She used a restaurant as an example, telling her American viewers, that they don’t need to tell everyone how they’re feeling and their whole life story.
She then claimed American’s lack education around other countries and world affairs.
“I am pretty sure the rest of the word believes that we have never looked at a map in our life — for some of you, I know that is true. So pick up one.”
“We’re seen as some pretty crazy people — you know how everyone from the US thinks everyone from Florida is crazy? That’s how the world feels about us.
“[And] do not get me started on guns, or the presidents, or anything political — but just know everyone thinks we’re going backwards and we are and everyone can see it and no-one is vibing with it.”
She also claimed they didn’t know how to take a joke, and encouraged them to watch English comedian Ricky Gervais.
“[He] makes a lot of jokes about us and they're pretty accurate and they’re pretty funny, but learn to laugh with it,” she said, adding, “I beg you — please learn sarcasm”.
“It’s called banter.”
Tay also noted she’s heard US travellers trying to pay with American dollars when in countries that don’t accept it.
“I’ve been hearing stories about this and I’ve been seeing this stuff on Tiktok that people are going to other counties and thinking they can pay with US dollars — what are you doing? C’mon we can do better.”
After calling out her fellow Americans, she then advised them to “pick up a book” and “please get educated” about the rest of the world.
“There is so much more out there and it is so beautiful,” she said.
“I know not everyone is able to travel and experience the things I’ve experienced and I am very lucky for that, but if you’re watching this video it likely means you have the internet, which means you have access to get educated.
“So please do for the sake of an American living abroad and for the sake of the rest of the world, please do.”
The clip has attracted almost 10,000 comments and while it’s left Aussies, Kiwis and Canadians in hysterics, with some adding their own experiences, it has irritated some Americans.
“I’m from Australia. Went to America for a five week holiday. Someone asked me what language we use in Australia coz my English was pretty good,” an Aussie wrote.
“I went to school in America for two years in the mid 80’s. They only taught American history. It was like the rest of the world didn’t exist,” another wrote, while a Canadian added
“I agree with your points. I can especially relate to how loud they are in restaurants. The money thing I will never understand.”
Another said: “You forgot to add ‘entitled’ & ‘arrogant’ and a few others but otherwise, it’s spot on basically.”
One Aussie joked they’ve never heard an American speak “this quietly/normally”.
“Well done,” they added.
A US woman fired back and said: “Well, my momma told my not to care what other people think, to which one person responded: “And that is exactly the problem, thank you for verifying this.”
A European chimed in to defend the US.
“I’m from Germany and no one I know thinks this. We all love the US and wish we could go there.”
“I’m from Indonesia, and we really admire people from the US because you all are incredibly expressive,” said another.
Tay commented that while “not all Americans are bad”, they do have a “bad rep due to the things I said!”
“AS AN AUSSIE WE THANK YOU FOR THIS MESSAGE,” an Aussie wrote in response to the clip.
But not all Americans were against her view, with many in support.
“I’m so embarrassed being an American living in Australia. I was talking SO loud when I first got here,” a US tourist wrote.
“As an American I totally see this. Buttttttt (sic) I purposely teach myself new languages and cultures. I speak three languages fluently,” wrote another.
A third wanted to make a point that while “all this is true”, it’s worth saying Americans are “also amazingly friendly and generous as a people”.
“I’m American and I feel this so much — someone get me outta here,” one joked.
