A red ribbon tied to a suitcase was once nothing more than a cute and innocent travel accessory to help people identify their luggage – until now.

A new thriller titled Carry On hit Netflix this month and the film has suddenly changed the meaning of the red ribbon.

Australian Border Force have even got in on the joke. The federal agency’s Facebook account captioned a photo of a black suitcase with a red bow: “It’s Christmas Eve. If you’re travelling today and this is what your carry on looks like, expect a few extra looks from us.”

“Travel tip: If you’re travelling near the holidays, a good cute way to distinct your bag from others is a cute little red ribbon,” she wrote sarcastically.

“Did we all just watch Carry On,” read one comment, garnering more than 170,000 likes.

“If I hadn’t seen the movie, I would think this is such a cute idea,” said another, with more than 60,000 likes.

“I have a black carry on with a red ribbon that’s been tied there for SIX YEARS in case I get forced to check it. Ruined now,” exclaimed someone else.

Many said they too had done the same for years and would need to cut their ribbon.

Other TikTok users have made videos with their dramatic reactions when spotting a bag with a red ribbon at the airport.
