The weirdest food Australian travellers have eaten overseas
FROM monkey brains to stink bugs and thousand-year-old eggs, Australian travellers have tried some really unusual local delicacies while on holiday.
MONKEY brains. Deep-fried tarantulas. Thousand-year-old eggs.
It turns out we’re quite a daring bunch when it comes to trying local delicacies while on holiday. The idea of gobbling down frog legs doesn’t make us jumpy, the thought of chowing down on crickets doesn’t leave us stumped, and chicken feet won’t make us ... well, you get the idea!
That’s according to a survey of 7000 Australians by travel website Wotif.com, which found that 56 per cent of us have tried an unusual meal during our travels. Wotif spokeswoman Kirsty La Bruniy said the results show Aussies aren’t scared of trying something different.
“Bear Grylls would be impressed with the number of creepy crawlies Australians are prepared to eat with crickets, witchetty grubs, bugs and grasshoppers all making it in list of the top 10 most tried local delicacies,” La Bruniy said.
“However, it’s the French delicacy of escargot (snails) that was the most sampled local delicacy tasted by Aussies.”
What’s more, the quirky dishes ended up being a hit with most.
“Living on the edge paid off, with more than half of the respondents (56 per cent) who tried a local delicacy saying they enjoyed it.”
So where were people most likely to try to bite off a bit more than they can chew?
“Paris, Thailand and China were the top destinations for trying local delicacies,” La Bruiny said.
