Seal pup takes on a great white shark – and wins

This is the heart-stopping moment a seal pup is chased by a 4m great white shark – and just manages to escape the deadly predator.

Shark numbers increasing

Dramatic photos show the moment a shark lunged out of the water to try to catch a seal pup, which narrowly escaped death.

The images captured the shark attack in False Bay, South Africa, an area known to be bustling with baby seals.

Out at sea, just off the coast of South Africa, a small rock called Seal Island is home to a number of seal pups around the year.

The young mammals tend to congregate around the rock to protect themselves from predators, which circle the tiny island in hopes of a meal.

But when they enter the water, they risk becoming breakfast for one of the huge sharks waiting for an easy meal.

These incredible photos show the moment after a great white shark circles the small island, building up speed to launch itself at its prey, just after sunrise.

The 4m-long animal can be seen leaping out of the calm ocean as it reaches out, jaws wide, for the defenceless seal.

The shark used the rising sunlight to disguise itself, going undetected in the imperfect light.

However, the small pup launches itself away from the predator in a lucky escape.

Tourists travel the world to visit shark sighting spots, for a chance to cage-dive and watch the creatures in their natural habitat.

Last week, an impressive set of photos were captured by a lifelong shark enthusiast, Nikki Brant Sevy, 51, showing a shark attempting to chow down on an unsuspecting seagull.

Ms Brant Sevy said that she hopes people see a different side of sharks through her photography.

In 2020 there were 22 unprovoked shark attacks in Australian waters. This accounted for over 38 per cent of the worldwide total.
