Turbulent skies for low-cost plane carriers is taking its toll on yet another airline, with reports Spirit Airlines is set to file for bankruptcy.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US ultra-low cost carrier failed to agree on merger talks with Frontier Airlines, with the publication citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the report, Spirit may be preparing for bankruptcy within weeks — with the carrier in “advanced discussions with bondholders to hammer out a bankruptcy plan that would have support from a majority of creditors”, the report said.

The airline, which despite the strong travel demand has been losing money for months, failed to report a profit in the last five out of six quarters, as reported by Reuters.

The publication reported last month, Spirit would suspend around 330 pilots on January 31 as part of its efforts to cut costs and firm up finances.

Spirit Airlines is a major American ultra-low cost airline headquartered in Dania Beach, Florida and services around 60 destinations.

Earlier, the Spirit Airlines plane was involved in a terrifying ordeal while at Haiti’s International Airport, after gangs opened fire at the passenger plane.

As reported by The Sun, the Spirit Airlines flight from Florida was struck by bullets as it went to touch down Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport.

A flight attendant was injured as gangs sprayed the plane - which had come from Fort Lauderdale - with gunfire on Monday.

Footage circulating on social media appears to show a hole where a bullet entered the aircraft near the rear door and hit overheard lockers.

Flight 951 was diverted and landed in the Dominican Republic instead. The air steward was checked over for minor injuries, and no passengers were harmed.

Another aircraft, servicing JetBlue, which was travelling from Haiti to New York, was also struck by gunfire on the same day as the Spirit Airlines plane was shot.

JetBlue Flight 935 arrived at JFK International Airport on Monday, local time, following the aforementioned incident with Spirit Airlines, with flight inspectors discovering a bullet hole in the plane’s exterior, The New York Post reports.

“We are actively investigating this incident in collaboration with relevant authorities,” JetBlue said in a statement, noting that the plane had experienced no issues during the flight.

The airline has now cancelled all flights to and from Haiti until December 2, citing the ongoing gang violence that has started to affect air traffic in Port-au-Prince.
