Reckless tourist filmed posing on edge of Rio cliff above 900m drop

People say they’ve been given “anxiety” after seeing footage of a woman posing for a photo in a popular tourist spot in Rio de Janeiro.

Tourist shocks with ‘crazy’ Rio photo

A reckless tourist was caught posing for a video on the edge of a cliff about 900m above the ground – leaving people on social media with “anxiety”.

The unnamed woman was filmed waving at the camera while sitting on Pedra da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In the video, the woman slides down the rock face just centimetres from a sheer drop before throwing her hands in the air, The Sun reported.

The person filming then pans out to show the city beneath which, while a beautiful view, is hundreds of metres below the cliff edge.

The video has had more than 114,000 likes, although not many people thought it was a good idea.

People on social media said they were terrified after watching the video, with Twitter user Sarah saying: “I got anxiety just watching this.”

Another woman said: “My stomach went into my throat for a minute.”

She inched her way to the edge before throwing up her hands in a pose for the camera.

Someone asked: “How does she get back up without sliding? OMG, it’s so funny how a video can completely freak you out. My pulse was racing like I was on the rock.”

Another agreed, commenting: “Makes me sick feeling just to watch this.”

Someone else said: “To risk her life just for a photo/video? She either has a strong death wish or she’s crazy.”

It isn’t the first time tourists have been spotted putting their lives at risk at the same spot.

The cliff is popular with travellers wanting to get a picture of themselves on the edge overlooking the city.

Thousands of images on Instagram show others posing on the edge of the rock.

Rich on Twitter shared an image stating: “It’s an attraction for visiting hipsters and thrill seekers. An all-too-common sight.”

Between 2011 and 2017, 259 people died across the world while trying to take selfies.

A young British woman died in Sydney’s eastern suburbs last month after falling from a popular but dangerous selfie spot at Diamond Bay at Vaucluse.

Another woman, aged 27, died in August last year after falling 30 metres from a cliff in Vaucluse and onto rocks below.
