A passenger aboard a luxury cruise ship was left shocked by the price of basic items in her cabin, including a tissue box that cost $436.

The list, which was provided to guests on the Viking Sky cruise liner, detailed many of the everyday amenities available in the ship’s cabins as well as the associated price should passengers wish to take them home.

The most expensive item on the list was, surprisingly, a tissue box that cost $US280 ($A436), followed by a $US190 ($A296) throw blanket and a $US145 ($A226) toothbrush holder.

“If you remove any of these items from your stateroom, you will be charged at the price listed above,” the note warned. Picture: Facebook.

Viking Sky is ship owned by Viking Cruises is a Norwegian founded company which operates cruises in Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, North Africa, China and south East Asia and North and South America.

“We hope you are enjoying your time on board Viking Sky. Your well-appointed stateroom features many delightful amenities,” the note, which was signed by the Viking Sky general manager, read.

“Should you wish to purchase any of those items — or any others not included in your personal stateroom category — please see your stateroom attendant.”

The list, which was posted online by a passenger, noted a bathrobe would cost guests $A117, a soap dish would cost $A218 and a wooden serving tray and its insert would cost $A234 all-in.

A glass tumbler, meanwhile, was listed at $A171 and a hair dryer at $A101.

“Which one of your Viking cruisers cleaned out their room when they left??? I’ve never seen this before,” the stunned passenger wrote.

Many commenters on the post couldn’t believe the cost of some of the items, particularly smaller bathroom essentials.

“Why are they charging $US280 for tissues,” one puzzled.

“I want to know what the soap dish, toothbrush holder and tissue box are made from,” said another.

Others, however, guessed the price list was determined by not by how valuable the item was but how often guests attempted to steal it. And was a discouragement to travellers to try and sneak the item off the boat at the end of their trip.

“I don’t think it’s priced by quality, I think it’s priced by theft of item. The larger the price, the more it has been stolen,” one person said.

“It seems like the things that are easy to lose are cheaper — and the ones you shouldn’t take from the room are over priced. Almost like an honesty system,” guessed another.
