Judgmental Maps set the scene for US cities — in a brutally opinionated way

IS there anything more boring than a map? What if they were rudely honest about what you’ll find at a particular place? Watch out — an opinionated perspective may be coming to a city near you.

IS there anything more boring than a map? How about a totally honest map made by judgmental jerks? Watch out — an opinionated perspective may be coming to a city near you.

They’re the maps which tie harsh realities to place names.

Manhattan? Home of “super white people”.

North Virginia? It’s where you’ll find “rednecks with no teeth”.

They can even tell you where to avoid the tourists — and strange smells.

Judgmental Maps.com knows no fear, nor boundaries.

So far, they’ve unleashed their cynical and stereotypical venom on US cities such as Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, Houston, Salt Lake City, Omaha and New York.

Submissions have been flooding in from around the world.

They represent brutally honest opinions about our urban way of life.

White trash.

Golf-obsessed old men.

Teen moms.

Religious wackadoodles.

Meth labs.

And don’t forget “meh”.

All are labels applied to characterise familiar places and suburbs.

Judgmental?

“Most of us are, whether we recognise it and put our labels on a map or not.” JudgementalMaps blog curator Trent Gillaspie wrote to The Atlantic.

“There are a couple things to keep in mind here,” he wrote.

“One, we encourage people to offend everyone. You can’t be selective in your mockery; when you start exempting some things and lambasting others, that’s when it turns into intolerance and bigotry.”

“Two, it’s important for people to take this with a grain of salt, and for mapmakers (“snarchitects,” as we call them) to not feel compelled to combat any negative responses that come to the map”

To find out how to join the ranks of “snarchitects”, drop a note on the JudgementalMaps blog here.
