Home Alone fans shocked after making expensive mistake during Plaza Hotel stay
When it comes to a decadent dessert, no price is too high — except for when you’re stung with a few scoops of ice cream for nearly $800.
Now we know how Kevin McCallister racked up such a hefty room service bill.
Inspired by the 1992 Christmas flick Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, the iconic Plaza Hotel offers a dining special that pays homage to the character’s decadent dessert order.
But the cost to your wallet is no treat — as two guests recently discovered.
Amira Harvey, an LA-based musician and content creator, and influencer Jenna Sinatra were gobsmacked by the eye-watering price tag of their lavish ice cream sundae order after deciding to splash out on room service.
The pair, who were staying at the Plaza Hotel, claimed they “accidentally” spent $500 ($A807) on the 16-scoop tower of ice cream — complete with all the toppings, such as whipped cream, M&Ms, maraschino cherries and a choice of chocolate, caramel and raspberry sauces — in a viral TikTok video that has scored millions of views.
“POV: you accidentally ordered $500 ice cream,” Harvey wrote on the video.
In the clip, a shocked Sinatra recounted that, before placing the order, Harvey assured her it was only $100 ($A161) and that they would split the bill. Instead, she opened the check to see a receipt for $500.
Even after the sundae smorgasbord was rolled in on a lavish cart equipped with toppings galore, Harvey asked if they could “return it”.
“I haven’t even seen the movie,” Sinatra admitted.
Whereas Kevin McCallister’s sweet spread rang up a $967 ($A1560) bill, the “Home Alone Sundae” at today’s Plaza Hotel costs a whopping $350 ($A565) before tax, meaning a scoop of chocolate and vanilla ice cream rings in at more than $21 ($A34) a pop.
Add in the $12 ($A19) fee per order, taxes and the 22 per cent service charge and the total is brought to nearly $500 ($A807).
Viewers seemed just as surprised by the bottom line — and a few were more shocked that Sinatra hadn’t seen Home Alone.
One viewer joked: “You better eat every M&M.”
“For $500 I’ll be keeping the dishes and utensils,” added another.
Harvey replied to many comments saying she had “learnt (her) lesson” after the experience.
“I don’t think any ice cream is worth $500,” Harvey wrote. “But the experience was fun! lol.”
In subsequent clips — by popular demand — the duo shared footage of themselves indulging in the dessert adorned with multiple toppings. Although, they admitted, they “barely dented it”.
The Plaza also offers a “Home Alone: Fun in New York” experience that allows guests to “get lost in New York, Kevin McCallister-style”.
The package add-on gives visitors the opportunity to recreate iconic scenes from the movie and includes a four-hour limo ride to see the Big Apple’s iconic landmarks — which also doubled as filming locations for the film — such as Central Park, Radio City Music Hall and the Empire State Building.
While the limousine ride provides a hot cheese pizza, just like the flick, guests also receive the 16-scoop sundae in their room.
