Holiday warning as Spanish bar charges customers every time waiter goes to the table
At first, when a diner got his bill at this restaurant, he didn’t question it. But then he took a closer look at the items listed.
A bar in Spain has sparked outrage after charging customers for each time a waiter visited their table – and even making them pay for using cutlery.
The Imperial Bar in Zamora, Spain, added the surcharges to the Blas Galey Hermoso’s bill without his prior knowledge when he dined there last year, The Sun reports.
Mr Hermoso told how after finishing his meal, he was not only charged an additional €0.20 ($A0.30) every time the waiter went to his table but also an extra €1 ($A1.50) for the use of cutlery.
Since the incident, the restaurant has claimed the extra charge was for every drink that was served rather than every time the waiter went to the table.
The baffled customer posted about the charges on Twitter with it quickly becoming viral as others shared similar experiences. He posted at the time: “Something strange happened to us a few days ago in Benavente.
“Every time the waiter came to the terrace table to bring something: beer, the tapa … he charged us 20 cents.
“The last straw was the euro that he charged us to [bring] some cutlery to cut a toast that we had ordered.”
While many Twitter users were on his side, others said they felt the extra charge was not ridiculous.
In response, the bar said it is common practice for venues to charge an extra fee for service away from the bar, adding that the €0.20 ($A0.30) charge was for every drink served, Spanish news reported.
It comes as sun-loving tourists heading to Majorca were previously warned they face bigger bills in restaurants and pubs as a result of soaring overheads for owners.
